Introduction
Clients operating long-life assets in oil sands, upstream oil & gas, and energy infrastructure in the United States depend on accurate cross-discipline data to make safe, reliable operating decisions. On facilities under continuous modification, fragmented or outdated data is a direct operational risk. C&R Projects' digital twin work using Hexagon SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), Instrumentation (SPI), and P&ID (SP&ID) gave these clients a governed, database-driven alternative to disconnected drawings and spreadsheets, one their own teams could keep accurate long after the project ended.
Challenge
Electrical, instrumentation, and P&ID data lived in silos, with duplicate or conflicting tags and changes that didn't propagate between disciplines. Some clients had already licensed and configured SmartPlant but weren't seeing any return on it, because the environment was never governed.
The cost showed up in daily operations: engineering rework and late design changes, higher outage and safety risk, less confidence in power system and instrumentation studies, slower MoC approvals, and site visits needed just to confirm information that should have been available on record.
Solution
C&R Projects implemented SPEL, SPI, and SP&ID as one connected system rather than three separate tools, which is what let changes in one discipline show up correctly in the others. Client-specific standards and naming conventions kept new data clean as it was added. QA/QC audits and exception resolution closed the gap between what the system said and what was actually built. Training extended to operations and maintenance staff, not just engineers, so the data stayed reliable after handoff.
